From Simon Chapman, local shop owner, to Tesco:

Dear Julie,
Once again I write to you regarding tescos continuing failure to obey the law. Today at 11.45 I witnessed a bus unload its elderly passengers in the middle of the road, why ? because tesco had a lorry (T572 LKL)parked in the bus stop.
I followed your suggestion and went into the store and spoke to the store manager - Wesley Mullet. I asked Wesley to confirm that the lorries parked in the loading bay and the bus stop were both tesco lorries, he confirmed this and said that the second lorry was only using the bus stop to wait, it had only been there for 5 minutes and that he was trying to get the other lorry to leave. As I spoke to Wesley another bus arrived and was unable to use the bus stop. It was another 5 minutes before your lorry pulled out of the bus stop.
If your store manager is unable to prevent your lorries from using the bus stop what hope is there for the deputy/relief managers?  - as Councillor Khosa found out last Sunday.

Simon

Dear Mr Chapman,

Thank you for your email and may I first apologise for the delay in getting back to you on this matter.

I have spoken to Wesley Mullett, who is the store manager at the store, and he is keen to identify who the duty manager was you spoke to so we can ensure this doesn't happen again.  If you could reply to this email with details of the date and time this happened we can get on with this.

We are really sorry this has happened.  You are correct to say that we expect our drivers, if they arrive and the loading bay is full, to continue on with their journey and follow an agreed route so they can come back to the loading bay when it is clear.  Obviously, there will be times when traffic and issues beyond our control make the situation difficult but we have clear time blocks set aside so that clashes are avoided.

We are currently working to consolidate our milk delivery which will mean one fewer delivery each day.  I am disappointed that we have not yet managed to achieve this - I had hoped this work would be completed by this week - but I am assured that this will happen in the very near future.

As you pointed out staff should inspect how the vehicle is parked before it is offloaded and clearly a vehicle which is illegally parked should not be accepted.  We need to understand what this has not happened in this case so your help in getting to the bottom of this is really appreciated.

If in future you do want to speak to anyone at the store directly do ask for Wesley and if you can get back to me with the details of when this incident occured we speak to the staff to ensure there is no doubt about what our policy is on these matters.

Many thanks,

Julie

Further to Nigel's email:

I fully agree with Nigel's comments and would like to add the following:

Why did tesco employees help unload a lorry that had parked part on the crossing and part in the bus stop?  I saw two tesco employees pushing trolleys into the store from this delivery. I spoke to the manager who was on duty at the time and he admitted that the lorry was illegally parked but yet tesco staff still accepted the delivery and helped to unload it.

The highway code sets out the rules for bus stops and crossings.
tesco seems to be happy to break these rules. Could tesco please give St. Margarets a pledge that they will obey the law and not use the crossing or bus stop to park/wait/unload any vehicle that is delivering or collecting from its St. Margarets store ?

Dear Julie

It is very kind of you to let me know about this - I think we are all aware that the problems of parking and loading outside the St Margarets store are far greater than the clash of the milk delivery with other deliveries, but none the less, I do appreciate what you are doing in this case

Kind regards

Nigel Cannings

Dear Mr Cannings

I just wanted to email  you to apologise for the issue today with regard to our milk delivery clashing with our fresh delivery.

I understand Wesley, our store manager, apologised as the driver of the milk delivery misunderstood his instruction and instead of driving off and coming back later stayed and waited.

In light of this we have taken action and we will be stopping direct deliveries for our milk from next week (it will take us a few days to organise).  This should stop clashes like this from happening.

We are geniunely sorry this has happened.

If you have any further questions do not hessitate to get in touch.

Regards,

Julie
